The Republic of Madagascar, through the Ministry of Mining and Petroleum, and represented by OMNIS, in partnership with TGS and BGP, is delighted to announce that the 2018-19 licensing round for the Malagasy petroleum bocks will be launched at the upcoming Africa Oil Week in Cape Town.
44 offshore blocks in the Morondava Basin will be open for bidding. Further details on this campaign will be communicated during the official launch to be held in Cape Town, from 5 to 9th November 2018.
Exploration in Madagascar began in the early 20th century with the discovery of heavy oil rich sedimentary basins in the west, but is under-explored. The island shares a maritime boundary with Mozambique, which is in the same oil province where large quantities of natural gas have been discovered. Studies conducted in collaboration with TGS and BGP have resulted in new data that suggest there is a significant potential for future discoveries, both on- and offshore.
With the aim of intensifying offshore exploration activities, interested parties will be invited to invest in Madagascar. Furthermore, the Malagasy State, is working on creating an attractive environment for oil exploration. We firmly believe that this will be the starting point of renewed investment in the upstream oil sector in Madagascar.
